{"id":225,"date":"2007-11-25T21:30:38","date_gmt":"2007-11-26T04:30:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.stevenbrown.ca\/blog\/archives\/225"},"modified":"2007-11-25T21:30:38","modified_gmt":"2007-11-26T04:30:38","slug":"a-bugs-life","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.stevenbrown.ca\/blog\/archives\/225","title":{"rendered":"A Bug&#8217;s Life"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A while ago (a <em>year<\/em>?!), I made this cute little bug graphic for <a href=\"http:\/\/home.gna.org\/nemiver\/\">Nemiver<\/a>, a C\/C++ debugger for GNOME.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.stevenbrown.ca\/blog\/wordpress\/..\/files\/2007\/11\/bug_no_400.png?ssl=1\" title=\"No Bug\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.stevenbrown.ca\/blog\/wordpress\/..\/files\/2007\/11\/bug_no_400.png?resize=400%2C400&#038;ssl=1\" width=\"400\" height=\"400\" alt=\"No Bug\" class=\"imageframe\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Nemiver has since changed icons.  More recently, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.siuyee.com\/\">Shirley<\/a> pointed out to me that my bug had <a href=\"http:\/\/macapper.com\/2007\/11\/10\/remove-osxrspluga-trogan\/\">been used<\/a> on a Mac site!  \ud83d\ude2e  (Of all things!)  Heh.  I only <a href=\"https:\/\/mail.gna.org\/public\/nemiver-list\/2006-11\/msg00006.html\">posted<\/a> the graphic on the Nemiver mailing list, so I was really curious how the author of the post on the Mac site, Tanya Palta, managed to find my graphic.  I&#8217;m guessing it was a <a href=\"http:\/\/images.google.ca\/images?ie=UTF-8&#038;oe=UTF-8&#038;q=dead%20bug&#038;um=1&#038;sa=N&#038;tab=wi\">Google Images search for &#8220;dead bug&#8221;<\/a>.  \ud83d\ude42  I&#8217;m actually rather flattered that <em>my<\/em> graphic was picked for this post, but it&#8217;s worth mentioning that the license wasn&#8217;t followed &#8211; which is par for the course with the Internet.  The image and it&#8217;s source <a href=\"https:\/\/mail.gna.org\/public\/nemiver-list\/2006-11\/msg00009.html\">was<\/a> (and remains) released under the <a href=\"http:\/\/creativecommons.org\/licenses\/by-nc-sa\/2.5\/\">Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 2.5 License<\/a> (It&#8217;s a mouthful, but it&#8217;s pretty simple).<\/p>\n<p>The bug originally started with this:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.stevenbrown.ca\/blog\/wordpress\/..\/files\/2007\/11\/bug.png?ssl=1\" title=\"BBQ Bug\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.stevenbrown.ca\/blog\/wordpress\/..\/files\/2007\/11\/bug.png?resize=152%2C152&#038;ssl=1\" width=\"152\" height=\"152\" alt=\"BBQ Bug\" class=\"imageframe\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I remember <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jesselawrence.com\/blog\/\">Jesse<\/a> commenting that it looked like a barbeque.  Hah&#8230; so it did!  \ud83d\ude42  I went through lots of different iterations:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.stevenbrown.ca\/blog\/wordpress\/..\/files\/2007\/11\/bug3_dead_squished.png?ssl=1\" title=\"Dead Squished Bug\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.stevenbrown.ca\/blog\/wordpress\/..\/files\/2007\/11\/bug3_dead_squished.png?resize=152%2C152&#038;ssl=1\" width=\"152\" height=\"152\" alt=\"Dead Squished Bug\" class=\"imageframe\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.stevenbrown.ca\/blog\/wordpress\/..\/files\/2007\/11\/bug3_crosshair.png?ssl=1\" title=\"Bug in crosshair\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.stevenbrown.ca\/blog\/wordpress\/..\/files\/2007\/11\/bug3_crosshair.png?resize=152%2C152&#038;ssl=1\" width=\"152\" height=\"152\" alt=\"Bug in crosshair\" class=\"imageframe\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>And ended up with the graphic at the top of this post.  I also tried simplifying it and making the eyes bigger to support lower resolutions, but I didn&#8217;t really put any effort into fitting it within the <a href=\"http:\/\/tango.freedesktop.org\/Tango_Icon_Theme_Guidelines\">Tango guidelines<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.stevenbrown.ca\/blog\/wordpress\/..\/files\/2007\/11\/nobug-black_200.png?ssl=1\" title=\"black bug\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.stevenbrown.ca\/blog\/wordpress\/..\/files\/2007\/11\/nobug-black_200.png?resize=200%2C200&#038;ssl=1\" width=\"200\" height=\"200\" alt=\"black bug\" class=\"imageframe\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Anyway, that&#8217;s this bug&#8217;s life story.<\/p>\n<p>All images and SVG source available in zip file (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.stevenbrown.ca\/blog\/wordpress\/..\/files\/2007\/11\/dead_bug.zip\" title=\"dead_bug.zip - 330KB\">dead_bug.zip &#8211; 330KB<\/a>) under the <a href=\"http:\/\/creativecommons.org\/licenses\/by-nc-sa\/2.5\/\">Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 2.5 License<\/a>.
